Colonel Vishnevetskii receives an order to prepare a group of soldiers to act as a diversion to block the German formation "The Edelweiss". The group is to be made up of 14- and 15-year-old orphans whom no one will look for or miss. He finds them in children's homes and jail, and sends them to a training camp in the mountains. They are destined to destroy a fascist war base in the mountains and then be killed; since they carry "secret information", they are not meant to survive.
