Chapaev was an uneducated peasant and a decorated hero in World War I and the Russian Civil War. This man of action was fighting on the side of the poor; his troops consisted of peasants just like him. Unable to write, he could brilliantly demonstrate various battle tactics by moving potatoes around on the table. Incredibly intelligent though uneducated, he never lost a battle against the more experienced generals of the Tsar's Army.
